Becky May (00:18)
Hello and welcome. I am so happy that you're here. I'm Becky Mae. I'm an accredited practicing dietitian based in Australia and I have been absolutely immersed in GLP1 nutrition and what's happening in Australia, what's happening overseas, and I have just been knees deep.
Neck deep in it, looking at what these medications can actually do for people who have struggled with their weight, struggled with insulin resistance, struggled with food noise. It is truly remarkable.
I am so passionate about this topic and supporting these people that are on these medications because it is such an interesting and really unique situation that we're in right now. So I am an accredited practicing dietitian here in Australia.
I also have over a decade's worth of experience working in the Australian food system. And that combination is really unique. So I have the clinical background and understanding of nutrition, but I also understand how food actually reaches people and how our food system in Australia is actually set up. So I can tell you.
The reality of what the medications are doing for you and the nutritional requirements and how that actually relates into products that you can go into Algy, Coles, and Woolings and buy. I've started this business because I can see a big gap in what is happening in Australia.
For people who are on GLP1 medications, I can see that they get their script and because of the way that our medical system is set up, doctors just do not have the time or the knowledge to support the nutrition conversation that has to be with these medications.
Healthy eating, as what we've been told for decades, is not the way to go on these medications. Like I said, they're really specific, they're really unique in how you actually nourish your body on these medications. And
Our GPs, they just don't have the time or the knowledge to really stress the importance of nutrition for people who are on these GLP1 medications. Through no fault of their own, they just simply do not have the time. They are more worried about talking their patients through the actual medication, the
management of the medication, how to actually administer the medication, how to store it, probably side effects as well would be their number one topic. So it really is critical that this gap for nutrition support that we see time and time again coming through the research as necessary for sustained weight loss and sustained behavior change.
Is closed through a dietitian giving advice to people who are on these medications. And so that's what I'm here to do, and that's what I love to do. I love to help people who are leaning into these medications for an absolute life-changing.
experience in weight loss, food noise, insulin resistance, just behaviour change, changing their life, all of that. I'm really here for it. And a lot of other health professionals out there as well. The science in this space is so big and rapidly changing that a lot of them aren't up to date with what the best
nutrition support is. And so that's why I think that going to see somebody who is specific in this area is going to be of a benefit because they're going to understand the newest research, the newest protocols, all the things that a generalist just cannot stay on top of. So I firmly believe that GLP ones are a tool. It's not a diet.
And everything that we know about weight loss nutrition and how we have in the past supported weight loss for people is absolutely turned on its head. And there are new mechanisms coming out all the time for these medications and what they can actually do in people's lives. And so I think that we need to
change the way that we have this conversation about weight loss and I want to also reinforce that we need to remove the stigma associated with these medications and being on them. I'm really clear to my clients it's not cheating. It's using the tool for a specific condition and
There should be no judgment, no stigma associated with that. Unfortunately, we're not there yet, but I really feel like we are moving towards a place where more and more people are going to see the life-changing benefits of these medications and are going to become more.
Understanding of people who are participating in them. Now that's not to say that GLP ones are appropriate for everyone. They are a specific tool for specific people. And I think that needs to be really clear as well. I am not an advocate for handing out GLP ones to everybody who.
Wants them. I don't think that that's helpful and I don't think that that's right. But I think for the people who really need this, and I'm a dietitian, so I do not prescribe these medications, that is firmly sitting with our medical institute and our doctors. But I think that when
They are provided to the people who really need them. It is life-changing. And I have seen that. I've spoken to people who these medications have absolutely changed their life. And it's not cheating. It's a lot of hard work, to be honest. It's a lot of understanding what's actually going on, managing side effects, managing appetite when you've got
no appetite, managing food ain intake when nothing is appealing, managing the highs and lows of a weight loss journey. These medications are not a quick fix, they are not cheating. They really do take
intentional
thought and decisions and behavior change. So what this podcast will and won't be, number one, this is not individual medical advice. It is general. It's a general educational podcast. I'm not anti GLP one and I'm not pro GLP one. I have seen a need
for people who are on these medications and that is what I'm here to close. I am here to support them.
I will also be talking about what the evidence shows and what the data shows and what the research shows. I want to be clear though as well. I will be evidence-based, but sometimes I will be specifically practice-based as well. So I'll give you an example of what that looks like. I am a big supporter of people on GLP ones.
Having a daily electrolyte within their routine, particularly in the morning before they've had their coffee. Now, the evidence of the requirement or the need for electrolyte supplementation isn't there. But what I've seen anecdotally from people is that when they do have a daily electrolyte in their routine, the fatigue at 3 p.m.
is either removed or reduced. And I've seen that time and time again personally with clients that I work with but also anecdotally in Reddit Facebook groups. So while I am evidence-based, I also do know that we don't have the evidence for every single thing in this space.
And so sometimes anecdotal evidence is just as good and would be my suggestion.
I will be doing most of these podcasts just by myself, just talking about topics that I find interesting or think that you listeners want to know, need to know. I will also be getting guest speakers on as well. They might be GLP1 users themselves, they might be doctors, nurses, other type of medical professionals, they might be people working in this space.
I wanna get them on to talk to them and see what their view is and
Bring that to particularly the Australian audience who might want to understand a bit more about the context in Australia because at the moment we have got lots and lots of information about this space for America and for the UK, but nothing really for Australia. And so that's also a gap that I want to close. I want to become the number one GLP1 dietitian in.
Australia providing the Australia view of this space. So, what is coming up? The next episode that I'm going to go through will be looking at muscle loss and this big panic about losing muscle on these medications. Because it's true, the research does show us that with rapid weight loss and with reduced appetite and reduced intake.
A significant portion of your weight loss can be your from your lean muscle mass. There's no denying that. That's what the research shows. But this hysteria around it isn't needed. And I'm going to take you through what the research actually shows and a view that the current narrative is really missing.
and a lot of fear and scaring out there. I want to break down actually a different point of view and what that could mean for weight loss and muscle loss in this particular instance.
So thank you so much for joining me today on my very first episode. I hope you enjoyed it. And like I said, I am looking forward to doing this on a weekly basis and chatting through things that are relevant to people on GLP Ones in Australia. If you want to follow me, please.
Follow this podcast and you'll get notifications of when I have a new episode. Like I said, I'm gonna try and do this once a week and have one new release each week. I also can be found on social media. all of my handles, whether that be TikTok, Instagram, Substack, are at its Becky May.
So B-E-C-K-Y-M-A-Y. I share a lot of information on Substack.
And across Instagram and TikTok, but really mostly through Substack is where I've found the ability to talk about GLP ones because if you don't know this, it makes it very hard even for a dietitian to provide general education about these topics on social media. And so Substack for me is where I am a bit more able to share insights and information.
for this space without having restrictions and bans put on my accounts. So please give me a follow at Substack topics that are relevant for GLP1 users and that's Substack slash at it Becky May
So thank you again for being here today with me and I really look forward to the next episode. Bye for now.
