High Protein Snacks Australia: A Dietitian's Supermarket Shortlist

The best high protein snacks Australia has on its supermarket shelves deliver 10 to 20 g of protein in a small, ready-to-eat serve: high-protein yoghurts, cheese and cracker packs, hard boiled eggs, edamame, tuna cans, milk-based drinks and a short list of genuinely good protein bars, all available at either Woolworths, Aldi or Coles. I'm an Accredited Practising Dietitian and I spent over a decade inside Australia's biggest supermarket business, so this shortlist is chosen from shelves I know extremely well.

Snacks matter double on a GLP-1 medication. When meals shrink to a few bites, snacks stop being extras and become central to nourishment: they are how you reach a daily protein target that meals alone can no longer carry.

The fridge section (the strongest aisle)

  • High-protein yoghurt pouches and tubs. YoPro, Chobani Fit, Danone and the Woolworths and Coles own-brand equivalents: 15 to 20 g per serve, no preparation, gentle on a queasy stomach. The single most useful snack category on this list.
  • Cheese. String cheese, cheddar slices, Babybel rounds: 6 to 8 g each.
  • Cottage and ricotta cheese. Half a cup on crackers is about 15 g. Underrated and cheap.
  • Boiled eggs. 6 g each, cook a batch on Sunday.
  • High-protein milk drinks. Oak Plus, Up&Go Energize, Musashi shakes: 15 to 30 g in sippable form, invaluable on low-appetite days.
  • Edamame. Frozen or ready pods, about 11 g per cup.

The pantry section (read the labels)

  • Tuna and salmon cans. 15 to 20 g per can. Flavoured varieties make them a genuine snack rather than a chore.
  • Protein bars. The honest rule: 15 g protein or more, and pick one you would eat again. Quest & Musashi qualify. Bars are a backup, not a foundation; they are more processed and more expensive per gram than dairy.
  • Nuts. About 6 g per 30 g handful. Good fats and fibre, but protein-modest, so pair them with cheese or yoghurt rather than relying on them.
  • Roasted chickpeas and broad beans. Around 7 g per serve with useful fibre, which most GLP-1 eaters are short on too.

Building the snack habit

Two rules make this work. First, snacks are scheduled, not spontaneous; on a suppressed appetite you will not feel like snacking, so mid-morning and mid-afternoon protein stops go in the calendar like meetings. Second, snacks need zero preparation at the moment of eating. The yoghurt you have to walk to the fridge for gets eaten; the chicken you would have to cook does not.

A strong snack day adds to your daily protein target: yoghurt pouch mid-morning (15 g), cheese and a few crackers mid-afternoon (8 g), milky coffee somewhere in between (8 g). That is the difference between finishing the day at 60 g and finishing at 100.

If breakfast is also a struggle, the same logic applies there; see Ozempic breakfast ideas. And for the full trolley, not just snacks, start with the Ozempic grocery list.

The done-for-you version

My $27 Australian GLP-1 Supermarket Guide is this article expanded across every aisle: specific products, protein per serve, and swaps for dairy-free and vegetarian eaters, updated for what is actually on Woolworths and Coles shelves. It exists because label-reading with no appetite in aisle five is nobody's idea of a good time.

FAQ

What snack has the most protein per serve in Australian supermarkets? High-protein yoghurt tubs and milk-based protein drinks lead the pack at 15 to 30 g per serve. Among shelf-stable options, tuna cans and quality protein bars deliver 15 to 20 g.

Are protein bars healthy? They are useful rather than health foods. A bar with 15 g or more of protein and moderate sugar is a legitimate backup snack. Whole-food options like yoghurt, eggs and cheese offer more nutrition per dollar, so bars belong in the handbag, not everyday.

What are good high protein snacks for weight loss? The same ones listed here. Protein-rich snacks help preserve muscle during weight loss and manage the gap between small meals. On GLP-1 medications specifically, they are often the only realistic way to reach daily protein targets.

Are there good vegetarian high protein snacks? Plenty: high-protein yoghurt, cheese, eggs, edamame, roasted chickpeas and broad beans, nuts paired with dairy, and milk-based drinks. Vegetarian protein tends to be bulkier per gram, so dairy does the heaviest lifting on a small appetite.
