Wegovy Diet Plan: What to Eat, From an Australian Dietitian

clinical nutrition wegovy Jul 16, 2026

A Wegovy diet plan should deliver 25 to 30 g of protein per meal, fibre at every meal, and small portions on a regular schedule, with extra care during dose escalation months when appetite suppression and side effects peak. Wegovy is semaglutide at higher doses than Ozempic, which means everything about GLP-1 nutrition applies, but its turned up.

I'm an Accredited Practising Dietitian and this is the plan structure I use with Australian women taking Wegovy under medical supervision.

What makes Wegovy different

Wegovy is TGA-approved for weight management and titrates up to 2.4 mg weekly, a higher semaglutide dose than Ozempic reaches. Higher dose generally means stronger appetite suppression and, during the five-month escalation schedule, a recurring cycle: each step up brings a fortnight of reduced appetite and, for many, nausea.

Two nutrition consequences follow. First, your baseline plan must be protein-dense because volumes will be small for a long time. Second, you need a "dose week" fallback plan of plain, soft, protein-rich foods you can tolerate when the step-up bites.

If you are still working out access and cost, the PBS situation is moving; I keep the current status updated in Wegovy PBS Australia.

The baseline plan

The daily structure:

  • Breakfast: protein anchor: high-protein yoghurt, eggs, or a milk-based protein smoothie
  • Lunch: protein plus plants: eggs, tuna, chicken or legumes with vegetables and one grainy carb
  • Snack: dairy or nuts: high-protein yoghurt, cheese, a boiled egg, small handful of almonds
  • Dinner: palm-sized protein, half a plate of vegetables, small carb serve
  • Fluids: about 2 litres of water sipped between meals

A full 7-day version of this structure with Australian supermarket meals is in my Ozempic diet plan for Australia; it transfers directly to Wegovy. Your personal protein number, based on body weight, is in how much protein on a GLP-1 medication.

The dose-week fallback plan

Keep this list ready for escalation weeks:

  • Greek yoghurt, plain or vanilla, eaten cold
  • Milk-based smoothies with protein powder, sipped slowly
  • Eggs: boiled, poached or scrambled, no butter-heavy pans
  • Plain crackers with cottage cheese
  • Clear soups upgraded with shredded chicken or blended lentils
  • Toast with ricotta and honey

The pattern: low-fat, low-odour, soft texture, protein present. Rich, fried and heavily spiced meals are the most common nausea triggers on a slowed stomach, so shelve them for the fortnight.

Mistakes I see on Wegovy specifically

Treating no appetite as a win. Eating 600 calories a day is not success; it is muscle loss with a delay. The scale drops, then strength, energy and hair follow. Protein-first structure is the fix.

Letting protein slide during escalation. Five months of stepped doses can mean five months of undereating protein if every step-up knocks you flat. The fallback list exists so protein continues even when meals shrink.

No plan for maintenance dose. Once you reach 2.4 mg, appetite often stabilises. That is the moment to solidify habits, because this eating pattern is your long-term one, not a temporary diet.

Support beyond a plan

Wegovy works on appetite. It does not set your protein target, fix constipation, protect your muscle or plan your supermarket shop. That layer is nutrition care, and it is what I do; start at GLP-1 dietitian Australia to see how it fits together.

For the practical version: the $27 Australian GLP-1 Supermarket Guide turns these targets into specific Woolworths, Coles and Aldi products, and the free Muscle-First Checklist gives you the five non-negotiables on one page.

FAQ

Is Wegovy available in Australia? Yes. Wegovy is TGA-approved for weight management in eligible adults and available on private prescription. A PBS listing for a specific high-risk group received a positive PBAC recommendation and is pending; see my Wegovy PBS article for the current status.

Do I need to diet on Wegovy? You need to eat deliberately rather than restrictively. The medication creates the energy deficit; your job is making sure what you do eat carries enough protein, fibre and micronutrients to protect muscle and health. Restriction on top of suppression backfires.

What foods should I avoid on Wegovy? Nothing is banned, but fried and very fatty foods, large rich meals and excess alcohol are the most common triggers for nausea and reflux on semaglutide (Wegovy). Small portions of favourites beat total bans that collapse in week six.

Wegovy or Ozempic: is the diet different? No. Both are semaglutide, so the nutrition principles are identical. Wegovy's higher maximum dose often means stronger suppression, which makes the protein-first structure and dose-week fallback plan more important, not different.
